Birthday Party at the Bryson City Jam

April 4, 2013

Our first trip to the Bryson City Jam and what did we find but a warm welcome from friendly faces, fun tunes, and a birthday party.  After a day of working through a cold wet day the thought of playing a few tunes sounded wonderful.  Off we went, down the one mountain, through the valley, and up to Bryson City.

THE cake - yummm

We found the library and unloaded our instruments and met Jim, banjo player from Clearwater FL and Jeff, head librarian and banjo maker. As we settled into the chairs other pickers arrived including Larry, lead fiddler and owner of Granpa's Mountain Music.  This is a mixed jam of Bluegrass, Country, and Old-time players that operates as a song circle where players select basic and/or common tunes for the group to play.  You know: Old Joe Clark, Over the Waterfall, Tennessee Waltz, Girl I Left Behind.

Guess what, we had an audience that was as large as the picking circle!  What a treat to have so many appreciative listeners.  Several said they enjoyed my singing... I will return with those comments.

Pickers and Tristan with the cake!

Tonight was a special occasion, Tristan's 20th birthday (see the photo), so we ended a little early for the celebration.  Donna, Tristan's mother, baked a cake in the shape of a guitar.  Several of the audience members helped serve cake, punch, and chips.  When the evening was over we were warmed by the local hospitality and friendliness.  The ride home was not so cold.

Thank you Bryson City jammers, fans, and family.
