July 2nd
I saw a flyer for the dance
in Smithville and fortunately saw the sign as we returned to the
campground. Billy had driven past the
sign so I asked him to return for a closer look.
Yes, 6:30 tonight, we are going!
After cleaning up from the
days adventures we drove back to the community center, about 6 miles. The parking lot was filled with pickup
trucks, mostly Chevy which pleased Billy.
Entering the center we heard the music and laughter. Folks were sitting at tables placed by the
windows, some were dancing, and many were enjoying snacks from the
kitchen.
Selecting chairs at a nearby
table we began to observe the activities before introducing ourselves. After a few minutes we ambled over to the
snack bar and began to speak with the locals.
It is an interesting group that gathers each Tuesday evening to share
events in the community, sing a few songs, and kick up their heels. I danced with a few of the locals,
participated in line dances, and even convinced Billy to waltz.
The band play for tips and
invites others to sing a country tune or two.
The fiddler said he would be at the Smithville Jamboree, unfortunately we
missed him. Another gal said she was the
“Pie Lady” and made over 300 fried pies for the festival to sell at her
booth. Again, we did not see her booth
but the pouring rain may have deterred her from attending.
It was a fun evening and we
are the richer for meeting the country characters of Silver Point, TN.
