Going home to Citra and then to an adopted home, Lacoochee

Home is where we hang our hat but we do 'live' in Citra, the home of the pineapple orange.  It is an unincorporated community in Marion County.  And pineapple oranges are wonderful treats.

This fascinates me because my great-grandmother Mamie Center moved to Island Grove (just up the road) when she was about my age.  I always figured her home town of St. Augustine had grown too busy so she sold the family house to my parents and moved to central Florida.  My last home was Lantana (Florida) in Palm Beach County and the county was too busy for me... guess the pineapple orange does not fall too far from the tree.

Let me catch you up on the time in Citra...
The regular activities include
- Yard work... trimming trees, clearing underbrush, removing brambles, and similar tasks.  In general we suit up in boots, heavy pants and shirts, and gloves.  Fortunately, we have good tools from our yard redesign in Lantana (the last house) and enjoy the work which makes this job fun.
- Visiting ... family, neighbors, and friends who all live a few blocks.
- Playing music... around the fire pit, at a neighborhood party, going to a local jam or party.
- Hiking, canoeing, or visiting another park...
this time it was Dudley Farm Historic State Park  which is located in Alachua County.  Just how did Alachua County snag so many state parks?

December is time for Cane Days at the Dudley Farm, a festival, so the park was alive with historical figures, demonstrations, and old-time music.  Of course, we joined the jam which consisted of many old friends and made a few new friends.

So after a few days of too much fun in Citra we headed to a friend's annual music gathering in Lacoochcee, county of Pasco.  The first post office was established in 1888 and from there the story expands as relayed in this an excellent article about Lacoochcee
